We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Staff Software Engineer to join our engineering team and help shape the future of Dentrix Ascend. This role leads the technical design and delivery of key platform capabilities, building resilient, scalable solutions that stand up to imperfect data from external partners.

The Staff Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor and technical leader on a Scrum team of 5 engineers, reporting to the Engineering Manager. You will split your time roughly evenly between writing code and reviewing code and collaborating with product and engineering partners, drive incident response and postmortems, mentor fellow engineers, and embrace AI-DLC. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, thinks deeply before rushing to solutions, and takes ownership of their work.

This position is remote within the United States up to 10% travel as needed.

This position is not eligible for employment-based visa sponsorship. To be considered, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States for Henry Schein One without the need for current or future employer sponsorship.

What You Will Do

Technical Design & Development
  • Lead the technical design and development of backend features and third-party integrations for the Dentrix Ascend platform, from initial design through production delivery
  • Build systems that are resilient to bad data, including fallbacks for missing information and integrations with third-party data vendors
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code, following Test-Driven Development (TDD) practices and clean architecture principles
  • Apply expert-level understanding of object-oriented design, SOLID principles, refactoring, and design patterns to ensure long-term maintainability
  • Contribute to system architecture, focusing on performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Lead technical design for cross-team projects, translating business requirements into robust technical solutions
Quality, Reliability & Automation
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex technical issues, including database and SQL query performance
  • Drive incident response and postmortems
  • Serve as a quality gate for the team and contribute to test automation
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to improve team productivity and code quality
  • Deploy daily to CI/CD tiers and partner with DevOps/SRE to maintain pipelines and promote automation
Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Partner closely with Product Management, Design, Data/Analytics, Security, and DevOps/SRE to understand requirements and deliver the right solutions
  • Mentor junior engineers and raise the technical bar for the team
  • Participate in Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and code reviews
  • Stay current with Java and related technologies, advocating for modern tools and practices

Preferred Technologies and Platforms:
  • Languages & Frameworks: Java 17, Spring Boot, and Groovy
  • Databases: Postgres and SQL Server
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS
  • Containerization: Docker and Kubernetes
  • DevOps & CI/CD: GitLab
  • Monitoring & Observability: Dynatrace
  • Architecture: Microservices and REST APIs
  • Frontend: React, Vue, and Backbone

What We Are Looking For
  • 8+ years of experience building backend software with Java and Spring Boot, including significant hands-on experience developing enterprise-level applications
  • Ability to think deeply about large-scale problems, stepping back rather than rushing to solutions
  • Database engineering skills, including competence writing SQL queries and troubleshooting and debugging data issues
  • Comfort with daily and zero down time deployments
  • Experience creating and working with microservices and modern architectural patterns
  • Experience with large language models (LLMs) or similar AI tools for generating, interpreting, and improving code
  • Understanding of domain-driven design and expert-level experience in unit, integration, and end-to-end testing
  • Experience working in an agile environment with Scrum or Kanban
  • Excellent communication skills, including working closely with Product to understand requirements
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a sense of ownership and follow-up
  • Ability to explain your technical decisions, tradeoffs, and effectively estimate engineering work within 6–12-month timelines

What Will Set You Apart
  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Experience leading technical design for cross-team projects and mentoring junior engineers
  • Domain knowledge in insurance and claims
  • Experience with systems infrastructure alerting and dashboards
  • Full-stack experience

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
